May 9, 1950 : Robert SCHUMMAN, French Minister for the Foreign Affairs, popose the pooling of the resources of
coal and steel of France and Germany in an organization open to the other countries of Europe. This declaration, worked out by Jean
MONNET then commissioner in the Plan, is regarded as the act founder of European construction.
April 18, 1951 : Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg and Netherlands sign the Treaty of Paris
establishing the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC).
March 25, 1957 : Six countries sign the Treaty of Rome creating the European Economic Community (the EEC) :
Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg and Netherlands.
1962-1968-1973-1974 : 1962 : installation of the first Community policy: the Common agricultural policy (CAP).
1968 : the Customs union is carried out between the six countries of the EEC.
1973 : Denmark, the United Kingdom and Ireland join the EEC.
1974 : the Heads of State or government decide to meet regularly in the European Council to fix the main trends of the European
policy.
March 13, 1979 : Creation of the European Monetary System (EMS) in order to ensure the stability of the
European currencies. Europeans elect for the first time their members in the European Parliament by the direct vote
for all.
1981-1986-1989 : Greece (1981), Spain and Portugal (1986) join the EEC. The European single act fixes the
realization of the Single market at January 1, 1993. 1989 : eleven countries (the United Kingdom abstains from) adopt the Charter
of the fundamental social rights of the workers.
1992 : The treaty of Maastricht gives the blow of sending of the Union Economic and Monetary (UEM), extends
the capacities of the European Parliament, creates a European citizenship and strengthens the intergovernmental co-operation
between the Member States (foreign politics and of common safety, co-operation in the lawsuits and of internal safety). Then, the
EEC becomes the European Union (EU).
1993-1995-1998 : 1993 : The single market between in force in January 1, and the treaty of Maastricht in November.
1995 : Austria, Finland and Sweden join the EU. 1998 : opening of the negotiations for the widening of the EU to the Central and Eastern
European country and in Cyprus.
May 1, 1999 : Entry into force of the Treaty of Amsterdam and extension of Community competences.
December 7, 2000 : Proclamation of the European Charter of the basic rights of the European Union.
2002 : January the 1st : Effective passage at the single currency. December : The European Council
of Copenhagen, agreement in principle on the entry of 10 new countries in the EU from May 1, 2004.
February 1, 2003 : Entry into force of the Treaty of Nice ; Launching of a proposal for a constitutional treaty.
2004 : May 1 : Ten countries join the EU: Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Czech
Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia. october 29 : Signature of the Constitution ; Date envisaged to entry into force : November 1, 2006.
2005 : France then the Netherlands refuse the European constitution by referendum.
